Po Lin Monastery, Lantau Island - Hong Kong

Po Lin Monastery is a great place to visit. Just next to Big Buddha, you will not missed this as there are plenty of signs and directions guiding you around. It is relatively easy to visit even when you are on a solo trip, just like I did. Po Lin Monastery is situated in Lantau Island, Hong Kong.

Going to Lantau Island is easy as taking the MTR train. It took me about 40 minutes ride including interchange from Prince Edward MTR station to Tung Chung MTR Station to arrive the amazingly beautiful Lantau Island with just HKD $19.50 ( single trip ticket ).

Upon exiting the train station, I head towards the bus terminal situated just past the shopping mall, directly next to the Cable Car terminal. Walked my way to hopefully be in time to board bus 23 to see big Buddha at Po Lin Monastery. It cost me HKD $19.50. It was Sunday morning. If you're there during weekdays, you will pay slightly cheaper as compared to weekends and public holidays for the bus fares.

The journey up took me less than an hour. Upon which the bus stopped directly at the entrance, allowing visitors to walk towards Big Buddha. Po Lin Monastery is special as you can see visitors performing prayers and burning incense. With the beautiful architecture, full of vibrant colors. This place is bound to be flooded with visitors from around the world.

I visited Po Lin Monastery right after completing Lantau Peak Hike and visiting Wisdom Path. It is rather easy to walk around as there are plenty of sign board around guiding visitors to visit places, all within short distance of walking. So convenient and stress free. Places are however not so stroller friendly if you plan to bring one. I did not see a stroller at all when I was there. It is rather easier to carry the young ones since there are steps and unpaved land at certain parts.

You can try out the vegetarian lunch by the Deli via ala-carte selections or purchase a ticket for lunch with a fixed price to indulge like a General back in the days. I went with the ala-carte option as I was not interested dining like a General after my hike, soaked in sweat and midst. Definitely not a General type. Bought myself a dish of mixed vegetables, sesame ball and peanut mochi for snacks. The dish consists of tofu and not the usual green vegetables that I would prefer. Snacks were great though. Total spend for lunch was HKD $51.

Some visitors took this opportunity to light up some incense and join the community in performing the rituals. A good experience indeed to have if you would like to give it a go.

Definitely worth to visit this place to see the beautiful structure and learn more about another religion. Plus, you do not have to pay entrance fee to visit Po Lin Monastery. It is free to visit. However, donations are welcome to support the operations of the monastery.

Please comment and share your experience too if you have any.
